Reasons For Tooth Removal

When a tooth is too damaged by decay to receive a filling or crown, it may need to be extracted — or pulled — from its socket.

Extractions aren’t limited to decayed and damaged teeth though. Dentists will often remove extra teeth if they’re crowding other teeth, preventing them from coming in properly, and they may also remove baby teeth if they don’t fall out in time to let permanent teeth come through. Wisdom teeth are also commonly removed due to infections, decay and a lack of space.

How Do Dentists Extract Teeth?

Teeth are typically extracted in two different ways: a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. Simple extractions are when the dentist loosens a tooth before removing it with a forceps.

This is the most common way of extracting teeth, but some teeth that are broken or have not erupted may have to be surgically removed.
